Team Nigeria rounded off a remarkable Day 8 at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with another gold and silver medal, as Ezekiel Nathaniel stormed to victory in the men’s 400m hurdles while Udodi Onwuzurike delivered a brilliant performance to claim silver in the men’s 200m on Friday night.
The latest podium finishes boosted Nigeria’s impressive medal haul and capped another memorable day for the country’s athletes in Glasgow.
The highlight of the evening came from Nathaniel, who produced a commanding display to win the men’s 400m hurdles in a season-best time of 48.47 seconds. The Nigerian controlled the race from the opening stages before pulling away to finish ahead of England’s Jake Minshull, who took silver in 48.99 seconds, while Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson claimed bronze in 49.22 seconds.
Nathaniel’s triumph marked a remarkable turnaround from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where he finished sixth. Four years later, he returned stronger and more composed to capture his first Commonwealth title.
Nigeria’s sprint success continued in the men’s 200m final as Onwuzurike, running from the outside lane, produced one of the standout performances of the championships. The Nigerian clocked a season’s best of 20.09 seconds (+1.7 m/s) to secure the silver medal behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who won gold in 19.96 seconds.
Earlier in the day, Jami Schlueter completed an impressive Commonwealth Games debut by finishing seventh in the men’s decathlon with 7,665 points. Schlueter was fourth after the opening day and remained in medal contention through much of the competition before securing a commendable top-seven finish in one of athletics’ most demanding events.
With the latest medals, Team Nigeria’s tally rose to nine gold, six silver and three bronze medals, taking the country’s total to 18 medals.
