The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has backed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an independent United Nations (UN) investigation into the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, in a statement on Tuesday, explained that the party believed a UN-backed investigation would help unearth the truth, ensure accountability and secure justice for the victims and their families.
The party said a transparent and impartial international investigation would help establish the facts and strengthen public confidence in the ongoing probe, adding that the circumstances surrounding the incident had raised serious concerns.
NDC also expressed full support for Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for a UN investigation into the Oriire school abduction, stressing that the move was not about politics but about ensuring that every question surrounding the incident was answered through a transparent, credible and independent process that Nigerians could trust.
The statement stated that the safety and security of Nigerian children should not be subjected to political disagreements or speculation, urging the Federal Government to embrace every legitimate effort aimed at uncovering the truth, strengthening public confidence in security institutions and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
The NDC said the lives of Nigerian children were too valuable to be treated with anything short of the highest level of accountability, adding that an independent investigation would not only clarify the circumstances surrounding the abduction but also reinforce public trust in the country’s security and justice systems.
Makinde had earlier called for a UN-led investigation into the incident, expressing hope that an independent inquiry would provide credibility to the findings and address concerns raised by members of the public over the circumstances of the abduction.
