Lagos State Government has handed over a 22-year-old vulnerable woman, Tingni Kindness, and her newborn baby girl to the Plateau State Government after she received life-saving medical care through the Lagos State Health Management Agency’s Assistance in Distress (LASHMA-AID) programme.
The handover ceremony was held at the Conference Room of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja. Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Health Management Agency, Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, said the agency received an emergency call from the Lagos State Ambulance Service at about 9 p.m. on June 6, 2026, after an unconscious pregnant woman was found in Allen, Lagos.
According to Zamba, LASHMA-AID immediately contacted LASUTH to confirm bed availability before the woman was rushed to the hospital, where treatment commenced without delay. She later regained consciousness and, on June 21, delivered a healthy baby girl while still receiving medical care.
The Permanent Secretary commended Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for approving the Executive Order that provides emergency medical stabilisation for residents facing life-threatening situations.
She also praised the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, and the hospital’s management for their prompt intervention.
Zamba said the rescue demonstrated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to providing emergency healthcare to vulnerable residents and ILERA EKO enrollees, irrespective of their state of origin, assuring residents that the programme would continue and urged the public to report emergencies through the LASHMA-AID emergency line.
She explained that LASHMA-AID is funded through a percentage of the Lagos State Government’s Equity Fund for vulnerable residents, as well as a portion of health insurance premiums paid by ILERA EKO enrollees.
Zamba also appealed to the Plateau State Government to provide accommodation and economic support for Kindness to enable her care for her child.
Meanwhile, Fabamwo lauded LASHMA for effectively implementing the Executive Order on emergency medical care, saying Kindness was not in labour when she arrived at the hospital but was immediately stabilised.
He added that while arrangements were being made to transfer her to a suitable shelter because she had no accommodation, she unexpectedly went into labour and safely delivered her baby.
Representing the Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Caroline Pamglang Dafur, the Principal Administrative Officer of the Plateau State Liaison Office in Lagos, Mrs. Philomena Yakubu, thanked the Lagos State Government, LASHMA and LASUTH for saving the lives of one of the state’s indigenes, assuring that both mother and child would receive the necessary care and support upon their return to Plateau State.
An emotional Tingni Kindness expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Dr. Zamba, the LASUTH management and the hospital’s Social Welfare Department for saving her life and that of her baby.
It would be recalled that since the LASHMA-AID initiative became fully operational in March 2026, it has saved 34 lives, including eight ILERA EKO enrollees and 26 vulnerable residents.
