The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has expressed confidence in Team Nigeria’s readiness for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as preparations intensify.
Olopade said extensive work has been done to ensure Nigeria records its best-ever outing at the Games, adding that the NSC is using the event to raise standards for future international competitions in medal performance and athlete welfare.
“Everything needed to ensure our athletes are in the best frame of mind has been put in place, from apparel to pre-competition preparations and welfare packages, with the full support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” he said.
He said the athletes camping in Abuja are in high spirits, while track and field athletes will join after the AFN trials in Lagos.
Olopade also said concerns over the availability of some US-based athletes have been resolved, with Samuel Ogazi, Kanyinsola Ajayi and others expected in Abuja before the weekend.
He added that Nigeria is targeting 16 gold medals in Glasgow, which would surpass its previous best of 12 golds at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Nigeria’s contingent is expected to depart for a training camp in Aberdeen on July 2, ahead of the Games opening in Glasgow on July 23, 2026.
