English Premier League side Aston Villa ended a 30-year trophy drought on Wednesday night, defeating SC Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League final at Vodafone Park to claim the club’s first major silverware since the 1996 League Cup and its first European title since the historic 1982 European Cup triumph over Bayern Munich.
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers sealed a dominant victory for manager Unai Emery in front of a jubilant crowd that included Prince William. The triumph marked Villa’s first major European honour in 44 years, reviving memories of the club’s iconic continental success in 1982.
Freiburg, whose 122-year history has yet to produce a major trophy, struggled to cope with Villa’s intensity, with the gulf in quality becoming increasingly evident as the match progressed.
The opening stages were cautious, with both sides adopting a direct approach, but Villa gradually took control of proceedings. The breakthrough came in the 41st minute through a well-worked corner routine. Rogers played a short pass before delivering a precise cross for Tielemans, who arrived at pace and fired a right-footed volley through the legs of Maximilian Eggestein into the bottom corner.
It was the second consecutive match in which Villa scored from a rehearsed set-piece routine, following a similar move that created a goal against Liverpool FC the previous Friday — further highlighting the influence of set-piece coach Austin MacPhee.
Villa doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time when Buendia collected the ball on the edge of the box, shifted onto his left foot and curled a superb strike into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. Any hopes of a Freiburg comeback disappeared in the 58th minute after a flowing move involving John McGinn, Lucas Digne and Buendia ended with Rogers sliding in at the near post to convert a low cross and make it 3-0.
Freiburg’s brightest performer, 20-year-old Johan Manzambi, tested Emiliano Martínez with a long-range effort in the first half and caused occasional problems with his athleticism and long throws, but Villa remained firmly in control throughout. Amadou Onana nearly added a fourth in the 70th minute when his close-range header struck the post.
Emery later introduced Ian Maatsen and Jadon Sancho in the closing stages as Villa comfortably saw out the victory to cap a memorable night in Istanbul.
