Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has opened up about a pivotal conversation he had with former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger regarding his international future.
Iwobi, who represented England at youth level before committing to Nigeria, said the decision came at a crucial stage in his career when he was weighing his options between the two nations.
He revealed that during that period, he was still trying to sort out his FIFA clearance, which prevented him from featuring in key matches.
“I couldn’t play the knockout games to qualify for the Olympics, but I went to watch and be part of the squad,” Iwobi said.
He added that the atmosphere around the Nigerian team made a strong impression on him, especially the passion of the supporters.
“The away fans turned up with instruments, making noise. I felt like I was at home this is where I belong,” he said.
Iwobi also disclosed that Wenger played a supportive role in the decision-making process, giving him the freedom to choose his international path.
“It got to a time when I had to play for Nigeria’s first team, so they called me up against Egypt. Wenger said, ‘What do you want to do? You can delay it so you can think about England, or you can go and represent Nigeria.’”
The Fulham midfielder said his experience with the Nigerian setup ultimately convinced him to pledge allegiance to the three-time African champions, adding that Wenger backed his choice and wished him well.
Reflecting on the differences between both systems, Iwobi acknowledged England’s structured and disciplined environment but emphasized the unpredictability and excitement of playing for Nigeria, describing it as an experience filled with passion.
