Arsenal booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals following a tense goalless draw against Sporting at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners advanced 1-0 on aggregate, courtesy of Kai Havertz’s late winner in the first leg in Portugal, which ultimately proved decisive for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Arsenal began the match brightly, dominating possession in the early stages. However, it was Sporting who looked more threatening in the first half, creating several clear-cut chances.
Francisco Trincão and Pedro Gonçalves both tested Arsenal’s defence, while a misplaced pass from goalkeeper David Raya gifted the visitors another opportunity. Sporting came closest to breaking the deadlock when Geny Catamo struck the post with a powerful volley after being picked out by Maxi Araújo.
As the match progressed, tension grew among the home supporters, with Arsenal protecting their narrow advantage amid lingering concerns following their recent Premier League defeat to Bournemouth.
Sporting continued to press after the break, with Araújo squandering a golden opportunity by firing wide from close range. Arsenal nearly sealed the tie late on when substitute Leandro Trossard hit the post with a header from a corner.
Despite the pressure, Arsenal held firm to secure progression and make history, reaching back-to-back Champions League semi-finals for the first time. They will now face Atlético Madrid for a place in the final.
