The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a terminal decline, citing ongoing defections of key members as evidence of a deepening crisis within the opposition party.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Lagos APC Spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said the wave of defections by PDP governors into the APC had eroded the party’s structure and credibility, leaving it on the brink of irrelevance.
Oladejo argued that the development has reduced the PDP Governors’ Forum to what he described as a “one-man platform,” suggesting that Seyi Makinde of Oyo State could emerge as its sole influential figure amid the party’s dwindling ranks.
He maintained that the defections were not coincidental but rather a clear indication of a loss of confidence in the PDP’s leadership and its ability to manage internal crises. According to him, party insiders are abandoning the PDP due to what he termed a lack of ideological direction and persistent instability.
The APC spokesman further stated that a political party unable to maintain internal cohesion or retain its elected officials should not be entrusted with governing a complex country like Nigeria. He described the PDP’s current situation as both a failure and a warning to other political actors.
Oladejo also expressed concern over the implications of the PDP’s challenges for Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the weakening of opposition politics could undermine democratic balance. He attributed the situation to internal wrangling, indiscipline, and what he described as a focus on power without adequate preparation.
He urged opposition parties to emulate the APC’s approach during its years out of power, which he said was built on discipline, resilience, and strategic planning, rather than what he described as opportunistic politics driven by personal ambition.
Reaffirming the Lagos APC’s position, Oladejo said the party remains committed to strengthening governance and democratic institutions, adding that it would continue to deliver results while consolidating its political base.
He called on Nigerians to reject parties characterized by instability and frequent defections, and instead support platforms that demonstrate unity, vision, and capacity for leadership.
