The Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS) has intensified its push for international accreditation, rallying its workforce around teamwork, leadership and continuous quality improvement at a two-day forum held February 16–17, 2026, in Lagos.
Themed “Accreditation as a Shared Goal: Strengthening Teamwork and Quality for Safe, Reliable Blood Transfusion Services,” the engagement brought together management, technical staff and volunteers to review processes, identify gaps and develop measurable performance indicators for sustained improvement.
Executive Secretary, Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya, described the forum as a shift from one-off training sessions to a continuous institutional process anchored on collaboration and accountability. She said the initiative was designed to assess past challenges, consolidate gains and strengthen existing systems.
Osikomaiya emphasised that effective teamwork, team building and leadership development are critical to achieving accreditation goals and ensuring continuous quality improvement beyond the training period. She added that the sessions were highly interactive, with each unit outlining achievable targets using available guidelines and resources.
She also noted the active role of the monitoring and enforcement subcommittee in ensuring follow-up on agreed initiatives, while all departments contributed to developing key performance indicators to enhance accountability across the service.
Facilitator, retired Major General Mrs. Tilewa Amosu, said the retreat fostered bonding and clarified roles among personnel whose duties require seamless collaboration. She commended the service for maintaining high standards and expressed confidence that the engagement would align operations with international best practices.
Consultant Haematologist, Dr. Orolu Adebukola, explained that the programme aimed to ensure every staff member understands their role in the accreditation process. She said the service is aligning its operations with standards set by the African Society for Blood Transfusion and the National Blood Service Agency, stressing that accreditation must be a shared responsibility.
Quality Assurance Manager, Mr. Taiwo Oloko, and staff member Miss Oluwasiji Damilola described the forum as transformative, noting that it strengthened teamwork, communication and commitment to safe transfusion practices, ultimately boosting public confidence in blood services across Lagos State.
