The Ogun State Government and the Federal Government have formalised the transfer of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, to federal ownership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The MoU was signed by Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Minister of State for Education, Dr Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during the institution’s 17th Convocation Ceremony held at the university campus. The event officially marked the transition of the institution to Tai Solarin Federal University of Education.
The convocation also featured the conferment of honorary degrees. The wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, received an honorary Doctor of Science in Childhood Education, while former Governor Olusegun Osoba was honoured with a Doctor of Science in Political Science. Governor Abiodun was awarded a Doctor of Science in Education Management.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Ahmad said the Federal Government’s decision to take over the institution in March 2025 was deliberate and guided by national interest. She noted that the move reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening teacher education and promoting sustainable national development.
She explained that the signing of the MoU formally integrates the university into the federal system, ensuring institutional stability, staff welfare, students’ interests, and long-term growth in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Governor Abiodun described the takeover as a step toward promoting national equity through a more balanced distribution of federal institutions. He added that the transition honours the legacies of prominent education advocates in the state and formally hands over all responsibilities to the Federal Government.
The governor also highlighted Ogun State’s commitment to education, disclosing that ₦275.4 billion was allocated to the sector in the 2026 budget to expand access to quality learning and reduce inequality.
In her response, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, represented by Hajiya Nana Shettima, announced a ₦50 million endowment fund for the overall best graduating female student. The university’s Pro-Chancellor, Prof Rahamon Bello, and Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adekunle Ajayi, commended both governments and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards.
