The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday rejected the apology tendered by Ibrahim Shittu, the lawmaker representing Saki West Constituency, describing it as reserved and lacking genuine remorse.
The issue arose after the Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin (Ogbomoso South), accused Shittu of making defamatory and malicious allegations against him and the Assembly leadership during a public programme in Saki Town.
The comments later circulated widely on social media.
Subsequently, Shittu apologized for acting on inadequate information that brought the Assembly into disrepute.
However, lawmakers criticized both the tone and content of his apology. The Ethics and Privileges Committee, chaired by Gbenga Oyekola, reviewed legislative instruments, oath documents, and video evidence.
They concluded that Shittu’s statements were reckless, unfounded, and capable of undermining public confidence in the legislature.
During the debate, some lawmakers, including Luqman Jimoh and Sola Owolabi, pleaded for leniency. Others, however, faulted the apology as insincere.
Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin emphasized that the allegations of bribery were serious and required a formal, unreserved written apology, which Shittu had failed to provide.
Consequently, the House referred the matter back to the Ethics and Privileges Committee to recommend appropriate disciplinary action.
