The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has thrown his weight behind the Run for Asiwaju 2027 Mini Marathon, describing it as a unique initiative that blends physical fitness with political awareness, grassroots mobilisation and youth engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obasa called on Lagos residents, particularly youths, to participate in the marathon scheduled for Sunday, January 25.
The race will commence at the Agege Local Government Secretariat, pass through several communities and terminate at the Orile Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
According to the Speaker, about 1,000 participants are expected to compete in the event, with incentives lined up to reward outstanding performances. He disclosed that 200 participants would receive ₦10,000 each, while seven professional athletes would earn ₦50,000 each.
Obasa said the initiative is targeted at energising young people and promoting civic participation, noting that the marathon carries a strong symbolic message. He explained that, just like leadership, success in a race requires discipline, resilience and consistency—qualities he said define the leadership style of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This is more than a sporting event,” Obasa said. “It is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our father, leader and mentor in areas such as economic reforms, infrastructure development, security and national unity, while also mobilising support to renew his mandate in 2027.”
He added that President Tinubu’s leadership represents “a race worth running and winning,” and urged residents to turn out in large numbers to be part of the event.
The Speaker expressed confidence in the success of the marathon and said he looks forward to welcoming participants at the Agege Local Government Secretariat on Sunday.
