In line with its commitment to the safety of road users, the Special Adviser to the Lagos Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, on Tuesday apprehended a bullion van driver, Mr Daniel Ikede, for driving against traffic at Chevron along the Lekki–Epe Expressway.
The arrest occurred during an on-site inspection of planned rehabilitation works on the corridor, when the Special Adviser observed the traffic violation and ordered the driver to be stopped.
Giwa reiterated the need for strict adherence to traffic laws and regulations by all motorists, stressing that driving against traffic is a major cause of road accidents and avoidable loss of innocent lives.
He condemned the reckless behaviour, describing it as a recipe for disaster, and expressed concern over the growing tendency of some road users to flout traffic rules with impunity.
The Special Adviser questioned the mindset of drivers who believe they are above the law, noting that the bullion van driver appeared to assume he could violate traffic regulations simply because he was driving a security vehicle.
Giwa added that traffic was flowing freely at the time of the incident, yet the driver still chose to drive against traffic, warning that such actions would not be tolerated on Lagos roads.
“You cannot be driving against traffic on the Lagos Expressway,” he said.
He urged all motorists to drive with caution and responsibility, emphasising that road safety is a collective responsibility, and confirmed that the driver would be made to face the full weight of the law for the violation.
