Tinubu Mourns Victims, Sympathises with Anthony Joshua After Lagos–Ibadan Crash

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sympathy to sportsman AJ following a tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives and left him injured.

In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), the President described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has cast “a deep shadow on this season,” while extending condolences to AJ and his family as they grapple with the emotional toll of the loss.

Tinubu praised AJ’s character and contributions to the nation, noting that the sportsman has consistently demonstrated courage, discipline, and an unwavering love for Nigeria—qualities he said have made him a source of national pride.

The President called for unity and mutual support during difficult moments, urging Nigerians to encourage one another “as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.”

He also offered prayers for Joshua’s recovery and for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the accident.

“I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period,” Tinubu said, while wishing the injured sportsman a speedy recovery.

On Monday the British-Nigerian boxer was involved in a serious road traffic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria. The crash occurred around 11 a.m. near the Sagamu Interchange, when the Lexus SUV in which Joshua was travelling collided with a stationary truck on the busy highway.

Two people in the vehicle died at the scene, while Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Other occupants survived with varying degrees of harm.
