Lax Supervision: Ondo Commissioner Issues Final Warning To Teachers, Vows Sanctions
The Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, has condemned the poor management of the Ondo State School for the Deaf, describing the conduct of the education officer in charge as unacceptable. He also issued a strong warning to teachers involved in any form of misconduct, stressing that serious sanctions would follow.
Ajibefun, who paid an impromptu visit to the school, expressed disappointment over the absence of senior officers responsible for supervising the activities of the students—especially given that they are children with special needs.
During his inspection of the facility, the Commissioner voiced dissatisfaction with the level of commitment displayed by the principal and other senior staff. He also criticised the quality of food being served to the students, noting that it fell below the standard expected based on government funding allocated to the school.
The Commissioner vowed that the Ministry would intensify monitoring efforts and ensure that any teacher found wanting would face consequences severe enough to serve as a deterrent.
He issued a final warning to teachers across public schools, stating “Teachers in public schools should take the job they are employed for seriously. If they are not ready to do the job, they should leave it for those who will. From now on, anyone found wanting will be dealt with. We will not condone any lackadaisical attitude from any teacher in the state.”
Addressing the enforcement of the state’s textbook reuse policy, Prof. Ajibefun noted that despite earlier meetings and warnings, some teachers still instruct students to write inside the textbooks, saying “We will mete out punishment to any teacher caught violating this directive”.
He emphasised that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration would not tolerate practices that increase the financial burden on parents.
As part of corrective measures, the Commissioner announced that a panel would be constituted to investigate the principal and senior officers of the school.
