Abiodun Canvasses Stronger Collaborative Efforts To Tackle Poverty In Nigeria
The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has emphasised the need for collaboration between government, faith-based organisations, wealthy individuals, and corporate entities to break the cycle of poverty in Nigeria.
Abiodun made the call on Wednesday while chairing the 12th Annual Lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church, titled “Poverty Alleviation, Economic Development, and Stability of the Nigerian Economy,” held at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of the church’s 70th anniversary celebrations.
According to the governor, the theme of the lecture is timely as poverty continues to challenge many nations, including Nigeria. He stressed that defeating poverty requires collective effort, not government action alone.
“As leaders, whether in government, the church, or the private sector, we must collaborate to break this cycle. Poverty is not just an economic statistic; it is a human reality. Faith-based organisations, private sector players, and community leaders must join hands with us to provide education, vocational training, mentorship, and micro-financing. This collaboration not only uplifts individuals but also fosters resilience in communities,” Abiodun said.
He added that Pentecostal churches can also help strengthen “moral capital” — such as discipline, stewardship, and accountability — which is critical for sustainable development. “Economic stability must be anchored on inclusive growth where opportunities are extended to all citizens, especially the vulnerable,” he noted.
Abiodun described economic development and stability as “two sides of the same coin,” warning that without stability, development would be short-lived and poverty would persist.
Speaking at the event, the General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church, Pastor Sam Aboyeji, said the lecture is one of the church’s platforms for discussing national issues and proffering solutions. He commended Abiodun for his consistency in socio-economic development through investments in infrastructure, agriculture, education, youth empowerment, and poverty alleviation initiatives, which he said have lifted Ogun State to greater heights.
Delivering the lecture, the guest speaker and former Economic Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, Dr. Doyin Salami, noted that although successive governments have implemented various reforms to rescue the economy, these have yet to deliver the desired results.
He argued that while the economy may be growing in nominal terms, the growth picture remains unappealing, as increased investments have not significantly stimulated productivity.
For Nigeria to achieve lasting economic stability and growth, Dr. Salami recommended a reliable data framework, improved security, adequate electricity supply, quality education and healthcare, and robust human capital development.
He also proposed a seven-year tenure for elected officials, saying the current arrangement limits the ability of leaders to focus on governance and implement long-term reforms.
