The Ondo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Osamaye, has announced a 16-day activism campaign against digital violence targeting women and girls, aimed at eliminating gender-based discrimination and technology-driven abuse in the state.
Dr. Osamaye disclosed this while hosting the International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA), Ondo State Chapter, noting that a series of activities has been lined up for the advocacy campaign scheduled to run from November 25 to December 10, 2025.
She highlighted that this year’s campaign focuses on the rising cases of technology-facilitated gender-based violence, including AI-generated deepfakes, online harassment, cyberbullying, and other digital abuses. She stressed that the campaign seeks to eradicate these emerging threats by urging governments to enact and enforce stronger laws, calling on tech companies to improve accountability and platform safety, and encouraging individuals to speak out against harmful online practices.
According to her, the 16 Days of Activism begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on December 10, Human Rights Day. She noted that violence against women now extends beyond physical spaces into the digital environment, where many victims face harassment and intimidation online.
In her remarks, FIDA Chairperson, Barr. Olafunmiloye Bolanle, congratulated Dr. Osamaye on her appointment, describing her as “a round peg in a round hole.”
Barr. Olafunmiloye explained that FIDA is a body of female legal practitioners committed to ensuring that women and children know their rights, and to protecting, preserving, and promoting those rights across the state. She added that the organisation provides free legal services to women and children in urgent need, while also conducting public education, capacity-building programmes, and training sessions on their rights.
She expressed appreciation to the Ondo State Government for hosting the zonal hearing on the women’s reserve bill and called for its speedy passage by the National Assembly and ratification by the Ondo State House of Assembly.
