Lagos TESCOM Urges Counsellors to Uphold Professionalism, Confidentiality In Schools
The Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has urged counsellors in the state’s education sector to uphold professionalism and strict confidentiality while discharging their duties. The call comes amid rising concerns about the psychological stress, emotional trauma, and silent suffering of some teachers seeking to avoid stigma and misinformation.
The Director of the Teachers’ Welfare Department, TESCOM, Mr. Akinwande Festus, who represented the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan Ismaila, gave the charge during a meeting with Heads of Counselling Units from all Education Districts and the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) at the TESCOM office in Ikeja.
Emphasising the crucial role of counselling, Mrs. Oyekan-Ismaila stressed the need for stronger collaboration between TESCOM, the six Education Districts, and LASTVEB to tackle issues such as sudden deaths and emotional or psychological challenges among staff.
She noted that the responsibilities of counsellors extend beyond students to teachers and non-teaching staff, particularly those facing emotional and mental health challenges.
“Modern counselling addresses the peculiar needs of individuals, incorporating therapy, daily care, and proactive interventions for a healthier lifestyle, which ultimately boosts productivity,” she said.
The Permanent Secretary urged counsellors to handle cases discreetly and to avoid unnecessary exposure of sensitive matters, advising them to escalate issues appropriately from school level to the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary before reaching TESCOM.
Counsellors at the meeting pledged continued collaboration with TESCOM to safeguard the well-being of teachers and students across Lagos State.
