Lagos APC Berates Peter Obi Over Criticism Of Tinubu’s Borrowing Policy

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, over his comments on the borrowing policy of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement on Thursday, the party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, said the Tinubu government’s borrowings are “strategic and targeted at critical infrastructure,” not “reckless”.

The statement read “Borrowing is not inherently reckless. What matters is purpose and prudence. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, borrowing is strategic — tied to critical infrastructure, energy, transportation, and productive sectors. This is a globally accepted practice; even the most advanced economies borrow to fund growth.”

Lagos APC further argued that Obi lacks the moral authority to lecture anyone on fiscal prudence, stating that as governor, he left behind unpaid pensions, deteriorating infrastructure, and poor human capital indices.

According to Lagos APC, Tinubu is taking “bold, necessary steps” to reset the economy through subsidy removal, currency reforms, and targeted borrowing.

“These are difficult but inevitable measures to secure Nigeria’s future. This is leadership in action, not empty moralising,” it added.

The party advised Obi to “stick to areas where his talent lies” and to “conserve his health,” saying, “On serious matters of finance and governance, he is out of depth and out of place. Tinubu is building Nigeria’s future, while Obi is busy building soundbites. One is a reformer; the other, a motivational speaker. Nigerians know the difference.”
