The 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, says it would be a “complete waste of time” for him to align with President Bola Tinubu’s political structure to achieve his ambition of becoming governor of Lagos.
Appearing on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, Rhodes-Vivour dismissed the idea of working within Tinubu’s style of politics, saying “No, I will rather go and focus on my business, my work, and my family. That [aligning with Tinubu] will be a complete waste of time”.
According to him, his political drive is centred on improving the lives of Lagosians and restoring the state to its “old glory.” “Any party that will not allow me to maximise the commonwealth of Lagos for the benefit of its people is a complete waste of time,” he added.
Rhodes-Vivour also condemned the dominance of what he described as “agberocracy” in Lagos politics — a system he says thrives on thuggery and intimidation rather than service to the people, saying “I am convinced that Lagos will be so much better and will breathe a breath of fresh air if the domination of what has become ‘agberocracy’ is removed from the neck of Lagos State”.
Asked whether he would contest the Lagos governorship election in 2027 on the ADC platform, he responded, “By God’s grace.”
Rhodes-Vivour disclosed that the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was aware of his decision to join the ADC.
He argued that a coalition remains the only path for the opposition to win in the 2027 general elections, stressing that the ongoing crisis in the Labour Party has hindered its internal activities.
