The Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) has secured the conviction of Mr. Wahab Nasiru Olabanji, a senior civil servant, for defrauding job seekers under the guise of offering employment opportunities.
Olabanji, who served as Chief Executive Officer (Accounts) on Grade Level 14 at the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, was found guilty of collecting money from unsuspecting applicants during recruitment exercises at the Hospital Management Board and the State Teaching Service Commission.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by OYACA Chairperson, Hon. Justice Eni Esan (rtd), the convict was charged with 30 counts bordering on official corruption, obtaining money under false pretences, and conversion.
After a 17-month trial, the court delivered its judgment on Friday, August 2025, finding Olabanji guilty on all charges. He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on each count, with an option of a ₦50,000 fine per count.
“The man was convicted on a 30-count charge of official corruption and related offences. After a thorough examination of the evidence, the court’s judgement reflects our commitment to combating corruption,” Justice Esan said.
In addition to the prison sentence and fines, the court ordered Olabanji to refund all monies fraudulently collected from his victims within three months.
Justice Esan emphasized that the verdict serves as a step toward justice for the victims and a clear warning to public servants who might consider similar acts.
“We will continue to pursue justice and ensure that those who exploit the vulnerable are held accountable. Our commitment to integrity in the public service remains unwavering,” she added.
