LASG Unveils Adult Language Proficiency Class to Boost Cultural Exchange, Career Opportunities

As part of efforts to promote language learning and foster cultural exchange, the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through the Multilingual International Resource Centre (MIRC), has introduced the Adult Language Proficiency Class to enhance communication skills, deepen cultural understanding, and expand career opportunities for residents.
During a recent tour of the facility in Maryland, Ikeja, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, said the Centre is designed to equip individuals with practical linguistic skills in both foreign and indigenous languages through initiatives such as language exchange programmes, competitions, and online classes.
Mrs. Dokunmu-Adegbite highlighted the importance of MIRC’s activities in promoting multilingual literacy and cross-cultural appreciation. She noted that since its establishment in 2009, the Centre has remained at the forefront of language education in Lagos State, providing high-quality language programmes and services to individuals, institutions, and organisations.
According to her, students of the Centre have consistently excelled in international language examinations, including DELF, TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français), and Canadian Qualifying Exams, positioning them for global career and academic opportunities.
She further revealed that the Centre currently runs multiple classes and also offers interpretation and translation services across several languages. MIRC, she added, also serves as the official interpreter for the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.
The newly introduced Adult Language Proficiency Class, she explained, is designed to cater to diverse learning needs, offering flexible study durations and schedules tailored to accommodate different lifestyles.
MIRC currently offers courses in Mandarin (Standard Chinese/Putonghua), English, Yoruba, Arabic, and French, among others. The programmes include two-month intensive classes, part-time sessions, and evening and weekend options for adult learners seeking to build proficiency for personal or professional growth.
