Tottenham Hotspur overcame Everton to secure the result they needed to preserve their Premier League status on a tense and nerve-racking final day of the season.
Spurs required at least a point to avoid their first relegation from the top flight since 1977 and condemn West Ham United to the Championship instead. In the end, only their third home league win of a disappointing campaign was enough to keep them afloat and send their fellow London club down.
On a day when the result mattered far more than the performance, Tottenham fully deserved the victory that spared them what would have been one of the most humiliating relegations in the club’s modern history.
The atmosphere inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium erupted in relief and celebration in the 43rd minute when João Palhinha reacted quickest after his header struck the post, with Everton forward Thierno Barry unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
The only real anxiety for head coach Roberto De Zerbi and his side came largely from their own nerves rather than any sustained threat from Everton, who looked sluggish and disjointed as their season fizzled out.
Spurs’ one genuine scare arrived in stoppage time when goalkeeper Antonín Kinský produced an outstanding flying save to deny Everton substitute Tyrique George.
There were emotional scenes at the final whistle, although the match had earlier been briefly delayed at the start of the second half due to a problem with the officials’ technology.
However, once the celebrations subside, serious questions will remain over a troubled and often chaotic season in which three managers, De Zerbi, Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor all took charge as Spurs came dangerously close to relegation.
