NPC Boss Takes Reform Drive To Owerri, Unveils Push for Digital Birth, Death Registration
The Chairman of National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, on Thursday, paid a working visit to the Commission’s Imo State Office in Owerri as part of his nationwide engagement tour aimed at strengthening staff welfare and stakeholder relations as well as creating awareness for the Commission’s activities.
Dr. Yusuf was accompanied by the Director-General of the Commission, Dr. Osifo Tellson Ojogun, the Director of Public Affairs Department, Nma Alhaji Shehu, and other senior officials from the NPC headquarters. They were warmly received by the Federal Commissioner representing Imo State, Prof. Uba Nnabue, his counterpart from Enugu State, Hon. Ejike Ezeh, and top management staff of the Imo State Office.
In his remarks, the NPC Chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing his 7-Point Agenda, which he said has gained widespread support within and outside the Commission. He explained that his visit to Imo State underscored the agenda’s focus on staff welfare, stakeholder engagement, and institutional strengthening.
Dr. Yusuf assured employees that staff welfare remains a top priority. He expressed appreciation to the staff for their dedication and urged them to continue supporting the Commission’s leadership.
The Chairman commended Nnabue for his exemplary leadership and cordial relationship with staff, which, he noted, was evident in the enthusiastic reception given during the visit. He also expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to his delegation despite the short notice of the visit.
Reacting to concerns about the deplorable state of the Commission’s office building in Owerri, Dr. Yusuf pledged to intervene, assuring staff that funds would be sourced to renovate and improve the facility.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, Prof. Nnabue thanked the Chairman and his team for the historic visit, noting that it was the first time in more than fifteen years that a sitting NPC Chairman had visited the Imo State Office. He described the visit as a morale booster for staff and pledged the office’s full commitment to the Chairman’s 7-Point Agenda.
The Federal Commissioner also expressed appreciation to the Commission for enabling the Imo Office to acquire its own property, transforming it from a tenant to a landlord. However, he drew attention to the urgent need for repairs due to a leaking roof that had damaged some office equipment, calling for the Chairman’s intervention.
Prof. Nnabue also reported the successful completion of the 2025 Mini-NDHS in Imo State, emphasizing that the exercise was conducted without any incidents of injury or loss of life.
In his remarks, the Director-General, Dr. Osifo Tellson Ojogun, announced that the Commission would next month issue a circular for the full implementation of digital birth and death registration across all states of the federation, in line with its modernization agenda.
The visit concluded with an interactive session between the Chairman and staff, during which key operational issues were discussed.
