The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has reaffirmed the institution’s zero-tolerance policy for antisocial behaviour, including cultism and examination malpractice, issuing a stern warning to students to desist from such acts.
She urged students to uphold the highest standards of character and learning throughout their stay in the university.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello gave the charge during the two-day Orientation Programme for newly admitted full-time and direct-entry (200-level) students for the 2025/2026 academic session. The programme, organised by the Students’ Affairs Division, is part of LASU’s commitment to student development, academic excellence, and sound character formation.
Addressing the fresh students at the university’s Main Campus in Ojo, Lagos, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated them for securing admission out of over 70,000 applicants. She noted that the orientation was not merely ceremonial but intentionally structured to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed for academic and personal success.
She also reassured the students of LASU’s continued commitment to maintaining a conducive and uninterrupted academic environment, which the university has sustained for four consecutive academic sessions.
In his opening remarks, the Acting Dean of the Students’ Affairs Division, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, advised students to take their academics seriously. He reiterated the university’s dedication to providing quality welfare services, supporting academic growth, and promoting an atmosphere that encourages innovation and character development. He further urged the students to read the Student Handbook available on the university website.
Day One featured several lectures delivered by key university officials. Representing the University Bursar, Mr. Emmanuel Sosu-Olaitan spoke on “Financial Matters: Fees, Awards, and Scholarships.” The representative of the University Librarian, Mr. Wakeel Ogungbo, delivered a lecture on “Cultivating Good Reading Habits in the University,” followed by a presentation on “Navigating the Admission Process” by the Deputy Registrar, Admissions Office, Mr. Kabiru Okugbesan. The Director of Health Services, Dr. Nasir O. Ariyibi, also addressed students on “Taking Charge of Your Personal Hygiene and Environmental Health.”
Day Two featured more informative sessions. The Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Fatai-Abatan, spoke on “University Guidelines on Students’ Conduct.” The Acting Director of the Centre for Response and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence (CRPSGBV), Prof. Igot Ofem, delivered a lecture on “Prevention of Gender-Based Violence in the University.” The Director of the Directorate of Legal Affairs, Mrs. Olajumoke Boyejo, enlightened students on “Your Rights and Limitations in the University,” while the Deputy Registrar, Exams and Records, Mrs. Abiodun Meruwoma, represented by Mr. Julius Nunayon spoke on “Types, Uses, and Management of Academic Records.”
The orientation programme equipped new students with essential knowledge, practical guidance, and a firm understanding of the university’s expectations, laying the groundwork for a smooth and successful transition into life at LASU.
