Nigeria Women’s 3×3 Wheelchair Team Makes History, Qualifies For 2026 Commonwealth Games

 

Nigeria women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team has secured qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, delivering a historic performance on Thursday, March 26.

The West African side defeated a resilient South African team 8–3 in the final to book their spot, becoming the first Nigerian team to achieve the feat in the women’s category.

On their path to the final, Nigeria overcame East African opponents Kenya 6–2 in the semifinal.

Reacting to the milestone, President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Oluwaseyi Johnson, commended the athletes and their coaches for their outstanding performance and dedication.

He praised the team’s discipline, teamwork, and fighting spirit, describing their success as a reflection of hard work and commitment.

Johnson added that the achievement would inspire a new generation of athletes and further boost the profile of para-sports in Nigeria.

He also expressed gratitude to the leadership of the National Sports Commission and appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their continued support for sports development and inclusivity.

Meanwhile, Nigeria men’s team fell short in their final, losing 13–8 to South Africa and missing out on the sole qualification ticket.
