Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ikorodu area of Lagos state have reportedly defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors who were received at the Ikorodu APC party secretariat by the former deputy governor of the state and Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) member, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, said they defected because of the internal wranglings in the Ikorodu PDP.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Mr Olayinka Adewale said that the emergence of a Southerner as the presidential candidate of the ruling party also informed their decision, saying the victory of the ruling party in 2023 would not only benefit the zone but the country .
“I am a delegate at the last PDP primaries and I was expecting the ticket to be zoned to the South.
“Today we have taken a very important step to move to APC so that we can support the candidate of our choice,” he said.
Receiving the defectors, the former deputy governor assured them of equity and fairness in the ruling party.
“We’ll ensure that you benefit from every opportunity regarding the welfare of members without sentiments in our party,” Ogunleye said.
He admonished the defectors to get their Permanent voters Card(PVC) and vote for APC in all elective positions in 2023 general elections.
Reacting to the defection, the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Hakeem Amode, said the defection was unknown to the party, saying that the defectors were not members of the PDP.
Amode said there was no way such defection would occur that the party would not know, denying any internal wranglings in Ikorodu PDP.
” This is strange to me. There is no way defection will occur that e will not know. Those people are not our members and I made bold to tell you that there is no internal wranglings in Ikorodu PDP and Lagos PDP at large”, said Amode.
