Lagos Assembly Commends Police, Calls for Stronger Community Security Measures

The Lagos State House of Assembly has commended the State Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Moshood Jimoh, and his team for their professionalism and commitment to safeguarding lives and property during recent security incidents in the state.

The commendation followed a motion presented at plenary on Tuesday by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the Committee on Information, Security and Strategy, who stressed the importance of community involvement in enhancing security.

Ogundipe emphasized that public safety is a shared responsibility, urging increased community awareness, public education, and stronger crime-reporting mechanisms. He also called for improved safety protocols in schools, commercial districts, and public spaces, supported by surveillance systems and regular risk assessments.

The lawmaker further advocated for continuous training of security personnel to boost their efficiency and responsiveness. He commended the Lagos State Security Trust Fund for sustaining security infrastructure across the state and praised Speaker Mudashiru Obasa for his leadership on the Neighborhood Safety Corps initiative, which has since been replicated in several states.

Ogundipe urged residents to use social media responsibly, warning that its misuse could worsen security challenges. He also recommended closer engagement between the Commissioner of Police and the House leadership to jointly address evolving security threats and rising social vices.

In his contribution, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu described the motion as timely, noting that the police had significantly improved in crime detection despite limited forensic tools. He credited the police force for ensuring the safety of Lagos during festive periods, which encouraged many in the diaspora to return home.

After deliberations, the House resolved that security collaboration must be strengthened among all stakeholders, especially at the community level. It also recommended proactive preventive measures, including robust safety protocols and surveillance in schools, commercial hubs, and public areas, to deter criminal activities.
