As part of its commitment to strengthening Primary Healthcare and ensuring residents have access to timely, high-quality services, the Edo State Health Insurance Commission (EDOHIC) recently organized a convention for Medical Officers of Health (MOHs) and other key stakeholders from the state’s three senatorial districts.
According to the Agency, the strategic meeting aimed to review performance, enhance collaboration, and promote the delivery of people-centered healthcare across Edo State.
Held at the Commission’s Headquarters in Benin City, the engagement focused on three main areas: reviewing performance for the second and third quarters, assessing the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) and the State Equity Data Reporting Tools, and evaluating the State Equity Financial Management Tools.
In her welcome address, EDOHIC Director-General, Dr. Augusta Ikpea-Enaholo, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to fostering collaboration, improving reporting processes, and ensuring accessible, reliable healthcare for residents. She commended the MOHs for their leadership in coordinating Primary Healthcare services across the state.
Dr. Ikpea-Enaholo also highlighted recent Commission achievements, including the onboarding of additional Primary Healthcare Centres, enhanced facility readiness, and measurable improvements in access to quality care at the grassroots level. She assured participants of EDOHIC’s continued support and collaboration, emphasizing that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration remains committed to building a resilient healthcare system as part of broader state development.
During the performance review, Dr. Owen Omorogbe, Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics at EDOHIC, noted that clear standards have been established to measure MOHs’ effectiveness in their roles. He emphasized that supervisory reporting is critical for accurate planning and decision-making, adding that findings from supervisory visits guide stakeholder interventions and support.
Speaking on the BHCPF and State Equity Data Reporting Tools, Dr. Omorogbe highlighted the importance of high-quality data in driving health system improvements. He explained that key decisions are made daily based on data submitted by Officers in Charge (OICs), stressing that each data point must meet optimal standards to ensure reliable planning and resource allocation.
Individual remarks from Dr. Marvelson Ima-Obasogie, MOH of Oredo Local Government Area, and Dr. Ehikioya Beauty Efosa, MOH of Ikpoba-Okha LGA, praised improvements in service utilization and highlighted the positive impact of EDOHIC’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in driving efficiency and better health outcomes.
During the convention, training materials designed to enhance reporting capacity were distributed to MOHs for onward dissemination to OICs across the state. The materials were complemented by audio-visual presentations demonstrating proper use of data reporting tools. The engagement reinforced the shared responsibility of strengthening Primary Healthcare and ensuring that all residents—particularly the most vulnerable—have access to timely, high-quality services.
