The Ogun State Government, under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers and retirees in the state.
This assurance came from the State and Local Government Pension Fund Management Committees following a joint meeting held on Friday, November 6, where they reviewed the progress of the ongoing implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) reforms.
In a statement after the meeting, the committees commended the government for achieving significant milestones in the pension reform process, including the successful enrolment and verification of state and local government employees, consistent remittance of monthly pension deductions, and the approval of palliative support payments to retirees.
They disclosed that more than 24,000 workers have so far received their accrued pension rights, while death benefits have been paid to 352 families of deceased employees. The committees also noted that existing pension laws have been reviewed to enhance administration, accountability, and sustainability of the pension system.
Reaffirming their commitment to transparency and prompt disbursement of benefits, the committees assured stakeholders that the state would continue to meet its CPS obligations in line with international best practices.
Representatives of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), who participated in the meeting, provided technical guidance to ensure full compliance with national regulatory standards.
The committees stated that their next phase of work would focus on addressing identified challenges, sustaining reforms, and scaling up improvements to guarantee long-term pension security for workers.
According to stakeholders, the progress recorded so far reflects Governor Abiodun’s consistent dedication to prioritizing workers’ welfare and safeguarding the dignity of retirees in Ogun State.
